This was my first time at the Pelican while i visited London. I had cauliflower leaves as a starter and cod & mussels as main. Everything tasted great! Few reasons why i didn’t rate my visit as 5*. Cauliflower leaves were actually battered and fried and this was not mentioned in the dish description on the menu. While it had great taste, i chose this dish because it was in veggies section and i was hoping for a vegetable kind of snack and the dish was too heavy for a starter. Would be nice to have that visibility on the menu. The cod took almost an hour to arrive, which was not a big deal for me but i was still surprised (it was lunch time on a wednesday). The dish was great, however funny enough i had the same dish the day before at the Hero pub and i thought it was executed much better, the cod at the Hero blew my mind honestly. The way the waitress was explaining the specials and scrabbling the names on the main menu sheet didn’t make any sense to me. Once she left and i was left with “soup” on the piece of paper trying to remember if that was the item she described as “creamy” or something else. Why not print the specials on a separate piece of paper? Not to mention they need a new sheet of menu for every single guest which is such a waste! Lastly, my bill included £10 for something i didn’t order and i never check the bill but was just lucky this time. I am sure this is just an oversight and was fixed immediately but i saw someone else in the reviews have mentioned similar issue.
We went for my girlfriend’s birthday. The staff were amazing and knowledgeable about all of the menu, and were keen to let you know about their favourites. The special white wine was incredible. THE SPIDER CRAB ON TOAST OMG! All of the starters and bar snacks were 10/10. We had the bone in steak. Yo? Sensational. You could pick between chips and mash so we got both, no regrets. I would’ve got the chocolate cake and cream but we were stuffed! Big fan, will definitely be back if they do a Christmas menu. Shout out to The Pelican, worth every penny and you’ve got a fan for life. Also, the people sat next to us were great. Atmosphere was pristine
Vibrant, above-average, classy pub experience for those also looking for great food. Their chunky chips were one of the best we’ve had lately. Bone marrow and steak were done very well. Crab on toast felt too small a portion and had some crab shells, so a care is required when eating. Price on the higher-end, but would be happy to come back again to try different menu. Reservation is a must during the weekends.
I’m not a big fan of English food but this restaurant made me reconsider my opinion. The food was simple but very tasty and reasonably priced. I would recommend the cod, sausage rolls and the lamb. The atmosphere is cozy and intimate but the pub setting is more casual. Would highly recommend!
