The Auld Shillelagh

âđ Stoke Newington đș £6.00 Guinness The Auld Shillelagh is located on Church Street in Stoke Newington close to Abney Park Cemetery. The nearest station is Stoke Newington overground. This pub used to be a dairyman's shop before it became The Horse & Groom, licensed 1871. The Auld Shillelagh came to be in 1991, opening as a home from home Irish pub. This is a long and narrow pub that has been extended three times over the years. The decor here is traditional with beautiful wood panelling, fireplaces and mixed traditional furniture. The servery is located at the front right and is lined with red leather bar stools. Just to the right of the servery is a prime location where you can sit by an open window and watch the world go by. Throughout the pub is a plethora of Irish memorabilia, Hurley sticks, rugby balls and as it is customary, the flag of the pubâs owners county in Ireland, in this case Roscommon. At the rear of the pub is a decent sized beer garden with a retractable roof. The beer selection is a diverse mix of mainstream, London and Irish brews, good to see @sullivansbrewco_ on the taps. One of the litmus tests of any Irish pub is how good the stout is. I decided on a Guinness, my pint was superb, price point was respectable. There is no food served here, but there are plenty of bags of Taytoâs to feast on if youâre peckish. I arrived around 1pm on a pleasant Saturday lunchtime in June. The pub was starting to fill up with a good mix of punters of all ages. The atmosphere was upbeat with a nice buzz about the pub. The service was exceptional, the team member who served me was pulling pints, changing barrels and engaging with locals at the bar and took it all in her stride. The pub shows GAA, horse racing, rugby and the footy. There is also live Irish Trad Music at the weekends. On leaving the @auldshillelagh , I had a big smile on my face and thought to myself âI need to visit this pub more oftenâ. This is a fantastic pub, a true authentic Irish pub experience. âïž This is a must visit London Pub. Visit @londonpubmap for more London pub info. đ» đ 8th June 2024â

âA WARM HUG There are few places that embody the spirit of a true Public House better than The Londesborough in Stoke Newington. On a Sunday afternoon, as the golden hour bathes the mismatched furniture in light, itâs a microcosm of the neighborhood. A rainbow coalition of families, friends, dates, and couplesâdiverse in every senseâgather under the same roof, basking in that peculiar British ritual: the Sunday roast. The tables, small and snug, compel you into familial intimacy. Ideal, perhaps, for nostalgic group photos but less so when it feels like youâre whispering secrets to your aunt while competing against the decibel level of a stag do two tables over. The acoustic designâor lack thereofâgives every conversation a soundtrack of pounding shouts and boozy laughter. A little soundproofing wouldnât hurt. The service, though, is faultless. Charming waiters flit from table to table with the grace of seasoned pros, soothing crying babies with an easy smile and fixing minor grievances before they boil over. A tear-streaked toddler may have been the only customer more demanding than my cousin, who lamented dry roast potatoes within earshot of the server. Their response? Extra gravy and a fresh batch of spuds, as if summoning kindness itself from the kitchen. And the food? Well, it certainly knows how to make an entrance. A picture-perfect roast arrives with beef sliced so thin it could double as a charming farmhouse perched atop a vivid patchwork of green, orange, and gold. The potatoes are perfectly crisp and sound like an applause with each bite, and the vegetables carry a crunch that suggests they havenât been boiled to deathâa rarity in British pub dining. But for all the Instagrammable glory, there were hiccups. The potatoes lacked that fluffy, buttery interior you dream about, and the gravy, though rich, wasnât quite bold enough to command respect. Itâs good, honest foodâbut not the kind of roast thatâll have me writing poetry to its memory. What elevates the experience is the warmth of the staff, who inject charm and care into every interaction. They donât just serve you a meal; they make you feel at home, even as the pub threatens to burst at its seams with raucous camaraderie. In short, The Londesborough was a Sunday well spent. A cosy and comforting roast that feels like a warm hug and a volume loud enough to remind you youâre alive.â

âExcellent tacos and starters. Cocktails were the best I have had in Dalston. Ambience was great. Only issue was the front door kept not being closed properly which made it a little cold at times but not a big deal. Overall my friends and I had a really lovely evening :)â

âIt took me 37 years to realose that Mexican is my favourite cuisine. There are not that many Mexican restaurants in London, but this one stands out. The food was very good. From start to finish, not one of complained. We all agreed that this was a spot worth coming back to. The fish tacos were exceptional, and I could eat them every single day. Their cocktails were also outstanding. I can't think of a better place in London for Mexican food. We will be back!â

âLoved our 1st visit to escocesa, we brought a friend there and he literally said that it was the best food heâs eaten since a long time, this was about chipirrones which are my favorite dish from the menu. The rest was also great, perhaps a bit too salty to my taste but itâs a personal preference. The service was kind and helpful, and we really enjoyed our time thereâ

Doña

âDoña just opened a restaurant above the bar and OH MY LORD itâs tasty. Best empanadas, tamales and flan in London! Also, as someone whoâs travelled a lot through Mexico and Central America, Iâve really missed a good bean dish. None of the Mexican/ Central American restaurants here seem to get it until now!! Doña has the most authentic and delicious beans!! The totopos and bean dip was like being back in Oaxaca. Also the margaritas were fabulous as always. Iâm so happy my favourite bar now has a restaurant thatâs just as delightful!!! Iâll be going back all the time now. Also theyâre dog friendly for well-behaved dogs!â

âReally enjoyed it here. The setting is lovely. The staff are really nice. The sausage and halloumi wrap was so so good and the chips were cooked excellently. The cappuccino I had to start was a delight. Would return here and recommend you do too. Could do with an automatic door closer on the door to the toilets as the hand dryer can be loudâ

âAbsolutely outstanding brunch! The eggs were perfectly poached with a creamy, rich hollandaise sauce that melted in your mouth. The bacon was cooked to perfection, complementing the soft English muffins. The vibrant veggies added a fresh crunch and beautiful presentation. To top it off, the tropical smoothie was refreshing, smooth, and the perfect pairing. A truly delightful mealâhighly recommend!â

The Good Egg Neighbourhood Restaurant Stoke Newington
93 Stoke Newington Church St, London N16 0AS, UK
Phone: 020 7682 2120
âIt gets a VERY high recommendation from me. From outside the Good Egg looks like a country town diner, and inside the same asthetic runs throughout. Its a comfortable, clean space. It's practical. The staff are lovely, and the young woman who served us was super engaging, with great recommendations, which helped because the menu has some quite original, unique options. The food was more than satisfying, as were the drinks. I feel silly having left it this long before checking The Good Egg out, however, I now know, and Iâll definitely be back!â
