The Royal Oak

6 Dorchester Hill, Milborne St Andrew, Blandford Forum DT11 0JG, UK | Pub

Rating: 4.7 (830) Price Level:

I have driven past this pub on more occasions than I could probably mention and always said must try that one. Well today was the day and so pleased that I did! I can honestly say this was one of the best (if not the best) pub food I have ever had. Our table of four all had different dishes and every single one was outstanding quality with a generous portion. Personally I opted for the ploughman's asking for it without the meat element which wasn't a problem at all. An excellent selection, fresh and tasty. I would highly recommend booking, even for lunch, as it was busy, and it's really not surprising why. The service was friendly and a good pub atmosphere made it a great experience and all at a fair price too. This will most definitely not be the last visit to this highly recommended Dorset pub. If you haven't been then add it to your 'must visit' list, but don't leave it as long as I did.

We had drinks, dinner and then stayed over in our motorhome and it was absolutely wonderful! The food was exceptional, the service was excellent and the pub and beer garden are great. We were made to feel very welcome and would definitely recommend!

We went there yesterday as a group of 15 and they were absolutely brilliant. We had the skittle alley to ourselves so the kids could play with the selection of toys in there which worked perfectly. We had a variety of meals across the table and everyone said how delicious it was. The pork belly bites as a starter were a definite stand out. Thank you to all the lovely team who served us.

The pubs staff were friendly and funny, not just robots and also not too cheeky it becomes weird. The portions were the size youd give yourself at a buffet. The price was fine. And the menu had a decent selection. I had the pie and it almost had more stake than my girlfriends ribeye. Highly recommend.

A Dorset gem. I've only ever had the Sunday Carvery here because it's fantastic value (£14.50) and absolutely delicious. I always end up asking for a box so there is bubble and squeak to go home with! The staff are great and friendly. I'd say this is a proper pub and Sunday lunch experience! Booking very much recommended they are popular.

A wonderful country pub! The breakfasts are excellent, the locally sourced bacon and eggs are delicious . The bedrooms are quiet and the bed was extremely comfortable. We also had a very good evening meal which was very well priced.

Mid week, mid day, lovely atmosphere and by 13.00 at least 16 people all in having a spot of lunch and a drink. No idea about the rooms as i was only there to kill a couple of hours while a friend went to an appointment. Service prompt, food very nice and good quality, chiabatta came with salad and fries on a fairly large plate.

Came here for a lunch meal as a surprise birthday party, and can't praise the restaurant enough. The food was lovely, and they managed a large group very well. I've been to other places before as a large group and it has been a disaster, so it was really nice to see how well this place handled the 23 of us. If I lived closer, I'd definitely be back more often!

We didn't stay at the New Inn, but we did have a large family Christmas lunch. The food was delicious; the service was fun, attentive, and professional. The atmosphere was lovely. Everyone has commented on how special the afternoon was and will return. I've already recommended The New Inn to folks and will continue to do so. If you get the chance to visit, GO!

We went for lunch as a party of 6. We had pre booked because it was the Christmas season. We were greeted by a very friendly member of the team. Shown to our table, allowed to settle, then had our drinks order taken and then shortly after that we had our meal order's taken by another charming team member. We didn't have to wait very long until all of our food was brought to the table. We had a gluten free option, a vegetarian option and 4 meals and starters off the Special menu. Every meal was beautifully cooked and presented. We had a really lovely time and will definitely be returning in the near future.

Terrific pub with a really dedicated owner/ landlord. So much effort has been made to create several different areas where one can eat and / or drink. It's a large building with a cosy front bar and a very pleasant conservatory. Upstairs is a library where food and drinks can be taken. Very smart! Various outdoor seating places and 2 verandas There are chalets to stay in, too. Food is homemade and of good quality. Good ingredients and large portions. Very reasonable prices. Good beer and other drinks. Regulars are very friendly and good fun. Good welcoming atmosphere, too. It's very clean, and all areas are well maintained as well as being interesting to be in. The landlord is really friendly and helpful. Just one sad note, it's closed on Mondays and Tuesdays out of season. The village is rural and small. However, it's very pretty and the pub is definitely worth the trip!!! Highly recommend and will stay there if we return to the area. Thanks to everyone who made us feel happy to be there!'

We will defiantly be returning as we feel we have made very good friends. Thanks again guys Dan and Sophie :)

The Martyrs Inn

49 Main Rd, Tolpuddle, Dorchester DT2 7ES, UK | Pub
P: 01305 602115

Rating: 4.5 (347) Price Level:

The history of this village is fascinating. In 1833, a group of six farm workers from the Dorset village of Tolpuddle were concerned that their wages had been cut, so they formed a trade union to ask for guarantees that their wages wouldn’t be cut any further. Other farm workers wanted to join their trade union, and potential members were asked to swear an oath and pay a fee to join and do the trade union was born although not without controversy. Inside the pub an information board pays homage to the six workers and the endeavours. I visited with my son and I had a ‘light bite’ fish and chips and he had a burger with all the trimmings. The location, food and service were all fabulous and well worth a visit either on your way or returning from nearby Athelhampton House. Highly recommended!

If you're looking for a cozy pub that delivers on all fronts, this is the place! The atmosphere is warm and inviting, perfect for a relaxed Sunday afternoon. The Sunday roast here is absolutely top-notch. The portions are generous, and the quality is superb. What really sets this pub apart, though, is the service. The staff are incredibly friendly and go out of their way to make you feel welcome. From the moment you walk in, you feel right at home. They’re attentive without being intrusive and always make sure you have everything you need to enjoy your meal. Karli served us today and Hebe greeted us. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a hearty Sunday roast in a charming, welcoming setting!

Just back from a fabulous 2 nights here. What a lovely place, would highly recommend to anyone thinking of going. We were made very welcome and the staff were so friendly. The food was lovely and my husband said especially the breakfast. I'm sorry I didn't get one of the managers names who spoke to us this morning, just after breakfast, but she was so nice and a credit to The Smugglers. We will be back.

I was on a one night walking break and feeling a little out of sorts. A lovely lady Hebe really looked after me and made me feel so welcome. I called in for a snack and coffee but booked a room. The amazing hospitality continued the next morning with delicious breakfast and Ellis really looked after me. I’ve only been away once on my own before and they really gave me confidence to do it again.

We’ve just returned from a wonderful two-night stay at The Smugglers Inn. On arrival, Lloyd greeted us and made us feel welcome instantly - before any money had even exchanged hands he made sure we were ‘fed and watered’ after our long drive. Nothing was too much effort for any of the staff…. Special mentions to Rafaela our waitress,Ella, and the bar-staff who really looked after us. The Sunday lunch was fantastic, great menu in general and a great breakfast spread! The room was spotless, cozy and well-equipped. It was my partners birthday and they went out of their way to make it special for him. We would definitely recommend staying here and we have already talked about returning one day. Thanks again to ALL the staff for making our stay so special. Sam and Phil

Dinner menu is varied and the food really good. Breakfast ... full English will keep you going all day. If you bring your dog then thereis good walking directly from the pub. This is a really nice place to stay and I look forward to the opportunity to visit again.

We stayed for three nights and were very happy. Our room was bigger than we imagined and The River Piddle was just outside our window. The hosts were fabulous, the food and drinks were lovely and the locals were also friendly. We did two fairly long walks in the beautiful surrounding countryside which we found on the village website. If you fancy staying in a characterful Inn with gorgeous surroundings you can't go wrong.

Had great long weekend here for an 80th birthday and could not have asked for more. You have the entire pub to yourself including a fully equipped industrial kitchen, many different inside seating areas, outside seating with BBQ and fire pit, plenty of parking, four good sized ensuite bedrooms and much more. Thoroughly recommended, hope to go back again in the not too distant future

Seven of us just had a great long weekend at The Piddle Inn. You get the back of the pub all to yourself including a fully fitted kitchen, 4 bedrooms a massive lounge and a separate dining room. We also had a back garden to sit in as the weather was so nice. The property is a work in progress and not perfect but has that typical olde English feel. Our second year and we will be back again.

Perfect stay! We had Room 2, and had a lovely view of the river and fields across the way! The room itself was big, as was the bathroom with bath and shower! The bed was very comfy too! As you can expect from a Inn it does get busy and quite noisy in the evening, especially at closing time when you're in bed and trying to sleep but what do you expect? The room/view itself is perfect so it didn't matter to us at all! The landlady was brilliant, hardworking, and friendly! The evening meals and drinks excellent and great value (Cheap!!) And the Breakfast was excellent too! What a lovely place to stay! We will be back one day! 👍👍👍

On arrival, after making a online booking, we were nearly turned away as staff said there was no reservations in our name, we had to prove it was booked from our online correspondence. Staff then found us a table, but advised us we had to go because that table was booked out at a certain time. We had our main meal, but didn't have a desert as we would have outstayed our welcome, only to find that upon leaving most of the restaurant was practicly empty, very disappointing. Apart from the above, the food and service was very good.

Lovely place, nice spacious rooms with air conditioning, decent telly and comfortable bed. Very clean and tidy, with a nice powerful shower. I really had to dig deep to find any fault with the place, and the only thing I did find wrong was that the toilet roll holder was was a bit loose. The continental breakfast had a good range of food, and was a nice way to start the day.

Just had a two night stay here at this beautifully presented pub/b&b. Staff were friendly and helpful, always polite. Room was clean and had everything we needed. It’s on the train line which doesn’t feel intrusive. The food was really nice in the evenings (didn’t eat lunch there), we were a big group one evening and there were two small issues but they were sorted. The first morning, arrived to breakfast and it wasn’t ready and staff didn’t know why, they quickly sorted it out tho. The only downside for us was breakfast, as there is no hot option.
