The Square & Compass

Worth Matravers, Swanage BH19 3LF, UK | Pub
P: 01929 439978

Rating: 4.8 (2476) Price Level:

All sorts of pasties is the only menu. Lots of different beers to choose from and the most amazing view, it's on a hill and best to experience when sunny. Outside seating is really unusual on lumps of stone or wooden benches.

After a lovely sunny walk we ended up at the Square & Compass. We had an ale and mulled cider with a steak pasty and a chicken leek and bacon pie. Service was quick and the staff were polite and friendly. We sat in one of the snugs. The whole place is a living museum and you step back in time once you cross the threshold. Service is through a hatch in line with the entrance, it became very congested very quickly with only a few people being present. Not so easy to navigate once you add a tray with drinks and food on it.

Keep it simple, a selection of pasties, a sausage roll, and a steak pie, plus some good cider/beer. Served from a hatch which does admittedly cause a bit of a queue, but eaten on tables outside in the sun was worth the wait. Don't miss sticking your head inside to the museum room on the far left and the atmospheric lounge on the right.

Such a special place. Can't beat it. Frequented the place when we lived in Dorset & come back on every visit. Visited today after a lovely walk from Worth on the Priest's Way, down to Dancing Ledge for a swim & back along the coast to Windspit before heading to The Square & Compass for a Pint & a Pasty. Nowt fancy, just good honest food at a good price. Couldn't ask for better.

Can Honestly say we had the Best Sunday Roast ever experienced! The staff were welcoming and friendly. The setting was cosy and historic 500 years old with a lovely ambience. The Roast was perfection! we had Beef and Pork with freshly cooked vegetables! Shame we do not live nearer but will definitely be returning. Thank you!

We arrived for a late lunch (the kitchen stays open all afternoon!) and were greeted by such a great group of people. From the bar staff, to the waiting crew and manageress all we keen to make our lunch a great experience. The food was great, huge choice, for both adults and in our case very fussy kids. Would highly recommend a visit. Great outdoor space too and - free car park across the street (which can be easy to miss as you drive by!)

I arrived by chance, I'd been looking for somewhere to stop that had sufficient car parking space for my motorhome. The Castle Inn was the first place I saw with sufficient room and I'm glad because the Sunday Roast Beef was perfect and good value. There was plenty of tender beef and plenty of vegetables. The service was friendly and efficient and I'd certainly go back again. I chose to sit out in the shady garden and it was delightful on a warm sunny Sunday. I even got to share my table with a ladybird!

We stayed in the village for the last week of April 2023. Terribly bad of me to be composing a review this late. We were a short walk from the pub so it soon became our local. The food and service was consistently excellent! There were always interesting specials available. The next time we hop across the pond from Canada to Corfe Castle, this pub will definitely be visited again!

My husband and I visited this pub as we were looking for a roast dinner. The sun was shining so we sat outside in the lovely garden - a lovely waitress come straight out took our order and within 10 mins served us with the most amazing roast dinner I have eaten out in years. Thank you and we will definitely be returning as we visit Swanage through out summer - this time camping at Norden Farm which I also recommend if your a camper. Compliments to the chef!

Corfe Castle

The Square, Corfe Castle, Wareham BH20 5EZ, UK | Historical Place
P: 01929 481294

Rating: 4.7 (10540) Price Level:

Corfe Castle and Corfe Town are well worth a visit. The Castle is National Trust and there is a car park on the left as you approach Corfe from the north that is free for NT members. There is also some free parking just beyond that on the right. To get a space you need to be early. From these, there is a pleasant walk up to Corfe Town and the Castle entrance. If you do not get a space there is a municipal car park in Corfe Town that is reasonably priced. Corfe Castle has an interesting history and there is an audio guide and other information that help bring it to life. You get some great views, including of the steam train. If you are not NT then entry is £12 for an adult and £6 for a child. The town is very pretty and worth just wondering along the backstreets to see the cottages. There are lots of cafe and restaurant options and a few interesting shops that are not chains and so make a nice change. There is also a museum and a model village. Overall a really enjoyable place to visit.

Superb dramatic ruined castle in a beautiful setting, towering over the picturesque village that shares its name. The castle's grey stone walls date back 1,000 years, and their imposing presence contrasts with uplifting views across the surrounding hills and heathland. Information boards reveal more about the castle's history as you walk around the site, and there's a small visitor centre with a café, gift shop and toilets just outside the grounds. The castle is open all year round except over Christmas, and the price of entry is reasonable for such an iconic place. Dogs on leads are welcome. There's free parking just outside the castle grounds at the edge of the village. Be sure to take a walk around the village as part of your visit, it's one of the prettiest in the UK and connected by heritage railway. There's a great view of the castle from the small hill immediately to the west - definitely worth the walk up.

A quintessentially British village with magnificent views of the castle. Take a day to walk around the lovely shops and take in the scenery. Have tea at the National Trust tearoom which is atmospheric with delicious cakes!

It is a really nice visit because it isn't only the ruins of the castle that you are visiting but the village and surroundings. It has a car park and a restaurant so you start from there crossing the big road and going up smoothly. It is a really nice walk and the views are extraordinary. There are activities for children and a historical walk through the demolished walls of the castle. Very good information about the history and recreation. In the village there are very pretty houses, independent shops and restaurants.

National Trust site. Good walk up and around so good shoes needed. Extra bits for kids to do. £12 each admission, which I think is top end. Lovely views. Nice little shops and cafes around the castle. Lovely and clean. Toilets on site which were clean enough for the level of trade. Looking forward to going back and seeing how the restoration work is going. Negatives: There was a bit more of the castle that you could see if you paid extra but for me £12 was already alot. Could do with a few more bins around.

I had lunch at the restaurant of Mortons Manor after a nice walk from Wareham to Corfe Castle. The hotel is located close to the entrance of the castle and has a parking lot, which is very useful in the small (and beautiful) town. The service was great and the food really good Also, prices are fair, particularly if you consider the quality of the ingredients. I definitely recommend this place.

Chose this place as it was the nearest to where we we staying that was dog friendly and just wanted a reasonable pub meal. My expectations were blown away, the service was great and the food was even better. My wife had the fish and chips which was an excellent sized portion with fresh mushy pees and tartare sauce. I had the burger which was absolutely perfect. Pub Burgers can quite often be disappointing but not here, it was cooked to perfection and full of flavour being char/flame grilled, possibly the best burger I have eaten. Sadly we were too full to sample the dessert menu but will hopefully be back again in the future. Our Labrador isn’t particularly used to dinning out so we were concerned how he’d behave, the owner welcomed us in and even provided a special treat for him. As a result we had a very pleasant relaxing meal. 10/10⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. Thank you

Stayed here whilst walking the coast path. There is a long diversion away from the coast to Kingston, so it was in a great location. The pub is clearly very old and the rooms reflect this. Very clean and warm but slightly shabby. I arrived on a Sunday, and they were serving Sunday Roasts, which was excellent - perfect after a long walk. Breakfast was lovely too - quality ingredients and well cooked. All in all, it was a very pleasant stay

Delightful in every way. Popped in here on the off chance as we had come for Corfe castle illuminations and got the wrong night 🤦‍♀️we were greeted by an absolute angel (May/Mae?) who was clearly rushed off her feet but still had a smile for everyone. Nothing was too much trouble even though we were being annoying and indecisive. We had some lovely food and the atmosphere was delightful, we were so impressed. By the time we were leaving another server had joined May and she was also lovely. We can’t wait to go back and try the roast as it looked delicious. Thank you May and team, you’re brilliant!☺️

From the moment of booking our experience of The Bankes Arms could not have been more positive. They were especially helpful over my young daughter’s multiple dietary requirements & there were a range of options on the menu suitable for her. We all had delicious roasts that were clearly made with top quality ingredients but will definitely come back again as there were numerous other dishes on the menus we would like to have tried! Service was excellent & everything contributed to a really special family day out. Thank you George & all The Bankes Arms team!

My wife and I have nearly stopped going out as we always leave disappointed, knowing we could have cooked better, tastier food at a fraction of the cost. This restaurant has renewed our faith. It was simply fantastic. We were out for a drive and found this wonderful place by accident. There was a special Sunday roast menu, so we chose from there. I chose the crispy pork belly, it was fork tender and delicious with a strip of the best crackling I have had in ages My wife had the roast beef, which was cooked perfectly. We ordered a side of cauliflower cheese and there was easily enough for two, we also ordered a side of chipolata sausages and there were tons in the bowl We could hardly walk it was so filling. Sorry about the photos, it was so nice I started mine before thinking about taking a picture - Oops

This was a really good choice for lunchtime. We had travelled to Corfe after visiting Durdle Door beach. This place is much bigger than it first looks. We chose to sit outside as it was such a nice day. It was a very authentic menu but I chose to have a fish burger. It was really yummy so tasty. I thought it worked well. The staff were great considering it was very busy. They didn't miss us away in the corner. Really good choice.

Today, we had the pleasure of dining at The Greyhound Inn, and it was an exceptional experience from start to finish. The atmosphere was welcoming, and we easily found a comfortable spot in the cozy back garden under a pergola. For my meal, I ordered a steak with salad and fries, while my companions chose chicken wings with spicy sauce, salad, and onion rings. We also enjoyed a pint of shandy. The food was absolutely delicious, with generous portions that left us more than satisfied. The steak was cooked to perfection, and the sides complemented it wonderfully. My friends were equally pleased with their meals, praising the flavorful wings and the crispy onion rings. The service was another highlight. The waitstaff were incredibly friendly and courteous, making us feel right at home. Their attentive service added to the overall pleasant dining experience. In summary, The Greyhound Inn offers tasty food, generous portions, and excellent service in a charming setting. We highly recommend it and look forward to our next visit.

We had a lovely day here yesterday. The Castle is part of the National Trust which can be a bit pricey for non-members unless you can find a free pass offer on line. For 2 adults and a child was £30. Under 5's get in for free and unfortunately no senior citizen discount but it was still a jolly day out. The staff were so friendly, and they had set up a teddy bear zip line for the children with a Bravery certificate to be had on exit. We loved exploring the castle grounds. The views and the tranquil sounds of the river were an amazing experience and a perfect place to sit and enjoy our packed lunch (there is a cafe by the entrance). We were also lucky to get a good view of the steam train passing by.

Cosy establishment outside Corfe Castle. The cream tea was very reasonably priced at £6.55 and consisted of a choice of plain or fruit scone, a hot drink, ready made jam and cream. You have to order at the front desk and the tea took around 7 minutes to arrive. We also ordered a cheese scone which was delicious and I would highly recommend it to combat the sweetness of the jam and fruit scone. Hot and cold sandwiches are also available after 12pm as well as gluten free options. The tea room had a homely vibe with a wood burning fire perfect to quell a brisk winters day. Note that seating is limited so it’s best to arrive early to avoid waiting. Dress code: casual Cost: £ Service: very efficient Ambience: cosy
