Wonderful birthday dinner. Lamb Scrumpit, Tuna Carpaccio, Pork Belly, Dorset Crab Linguine, Tiramisu (a little heavy for my preference, but still delicious) and Cheese and crackers. We’ll be back!

We stopped in while visiting from America. I would consider the White House to be an upscale pub. The ambience is great! Lots of stone and heavy wooden beams. There were lots of locals there when we were there which is always a good sign. The staff was wonderful! The food was truly excellent! Every starter and entree was done to perfection! If we lived in the area we would be here often!

The Dog House

Lydfords Ln, Gillingham SP8 4NJ, UK | Pub
P: 01722 703067

Rating: 4.8 (83) Price Level:

Delicious food, fabulous service and a lovely atmosphere. The food is cooked over fire and is superb - I had the bavette steak which was cooked to perfection. We had a selection of sides and the Hisbi cabbage is highly recommended. With fire cooking the food is cooked to temperature not to time so all the main courses don’t arrive at the same time - not a problem just keep nibbling on the lovely side dishes. Will be back!!

We were visiting for the weekend from Portsmouth and we fell in love with this hidden Gem. The food was beautiful, some of the best pork belly I have ever tasted as well as the quirkiness of this pub which is divine. 10/10… if only you were closer we would be here all the time but it was perfect.

Thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Dog House. Visited here a few days before Christmas with our next door neighbours for something to eat and a few drinks. Loved the decor and ambience of the establishment. Its an olde world feel to the place but with modern twist. Staff very welcoming and friendly whilst being unobtrusive. The food was so good and was served promptly too. Can't recommend this place enough and ŵe will definitely be back. Give it a try, you will not be disappointed.

Tonight we tried Nonna Amalia's Spaghetti Tree in the high street (under new ownership 3 weeks ago). We took our own bottle of wine & enjoyed SAPORITA pasta - Nduja paste (spicy chorizo paste from Calabria) mascarpone cheese and leccino olives & finished with Tiramisu, it was tasty 😋

My recent visit to Shaftesbury was partly inspired by the Bill Hicks routine from his album “Arizona Bay,” specifically the track “Hooligans,” so I kept repeating in my head as I walked around: “No one knows what it’s like, to be a dustbin, in Shaftesbury with Hooligans.” I was not aware before I arrived that Ridley Scott, the director of some of my favourite films, had directed a bread ad in Shaftesbury in 1973. I learned that while observing the hill used in the ad, and turned to see a cafe called “The Salt Cellar”, it not only offers an amazing view but also delicious food that enhances the scenic beauty, and allows it to be even more enjoyable. I went with family, so had the pleasure of trying a few of their homemade pies, the risotto, and a sandwich. Each dish was a delight, with the pies standing out due to their fantastic pastry, the risotto being perfectly cooked, and the sandwich was excellent. The side salads with the pies, which seemed unusual at first, turned out to be a delicious surprise combo. The range of food and drink options looks extensive and impressive, it was refreshing to find a place with a stunning view that doesn’t rely solely on the scenery to attract customers—the food here is genuinely worth the visit. The service provided by a young gentleman was great, he had a lovely manner, and our food arrived quickly. The excellent service and food was also great because the bill didn’t sting at the end, The Salt Cellar is great value for money. The view alone is worth the look, but I highly recommend making The Salt Cellar your lunch destination if you’re visiting Shaftesbury.

We found this little gem on our way home. Arrived at 7:30 ish and we phoned ahead to make sure food was still on the menu. We only had a few of the side orders but they were cooked to perfection and good portion sizes. The staff are friendly and happy to help, top notch customer service (It’s refreshing to get good customer service in the age we live in but The Crown Inn have is mastered). Great selection of Beers, Ales, Spirits, Wine. We will be back to try out more of the food and possibly the rooms in the near future as well. Will update when we have experiences more of this little gem.

Went to The Crown for a Father’s Day dinner with my daughter and her family. I had the mixed carvery of pork n turkey with roast potatoes and most of the veggies that were available I also had the mini delicious sausages which were very tasty, a must to try if you make a visit here and if they are on the menu! It was very busy due to the day but I felt that as we didn’t sit down down for the meal until 3:00pm it seemed that some of items had run out especially on the dessert menu with only, I think ‘sticky toffee pudding’ left. Other than that it was a good reasonably priced and tasty meal and well worth a visit, just get an earlier time to sit for your meal to try and ensure you get the offer of all available options you can have there! Will defiantly go back some other time to try some of the other menu options! Cannot comment on the rooms as we didn’t stay there.

We stumbled across this place on a short visit to Shaftesbury. Such an amazing building and interior, but by far the best bits are the staff and the food. Absolutely delicious food and incredibly friendly and helpful staff. It was quite quiet during our visit which can have an impact on the atmosphere - depending on what you're after - but I'd definitely recommend a visit!

First visit this evening and we will certainly visit again. Staff helpful and attentive, it was a relaxed atmosphere, and we were certainly not rushed. The food was excellent, the salmon and asparagus was superb and the chicken in cream and mushroom sauce was equally as good. Good selection of pasta and pizza dishes on the menu and a great kids menu. We had a lovely evening, thank you San Tonino.

A group of us went here for a meal to celebrate a birthday. I messaged beforehand to check they were able to provide a vegan alternative. They replied quickly with a list of different items they could adapt to be vegan. I opted for the Calzone as I haven't had the chance to have one since going vegan. It was absolutely delicious! The man (who I presume owns the place) was incredibly helpful and attentive. I fully recommend eating here! I'm looking forward to returning.

Lovely old chapel and the decor was fantastic, ordered onion rings to start and despite the price of £5.90 they were frozen, albeit well cooked and crispy. The Hawaiian pizza was basic and uniform, I was expecting a more hand tossed rustic base but the ingredients were good quality. The chips again were basic frozen fries and quite costly at £5.90. I wasn’t introduced to the specials board which disappointed me too. I’m glad I went to try the place but wouldn’t return.

Food ok carvery a hefty £17.95, chicken salad was lovely... Staff mostly young and didn't seem experienced., they were trying their best but need more guidance...some staff just looked unhappy...Wait to be served at carvery and deserts were brought out one at a time and slowly so some of us had nearly finished desert. Latte was warm . Pub very busy and noisy. Carvery meat lovely but some veg not brilliant, it was late afternoon so maybe first sitting would be better service.

I dropped by one evening when I was too tired to drive home to refuel with a coffee.. and ended up staying for dinner! Wonderful food. Great service and enjoyed sitting in the well heated (some were saying too well heated!) sun room / conservatory. Nice atmosphere. Only had one hitch which was the automatic air freshener blasting off in the disabled toilet (downstairs) which set off my allergies -unlikely to be a problem for most people. But the staff were right on it, took my condition seriously (yay) and assisted me upstairs to the regular toilet. I requested that this issue could be resolved e.g. by enabling a manual mode for the air freshener and the member of staff assured me that this would be passed on.. Looking forward to another visit, when this particular problem is resolved. I hope! :)

We didn't stay here in accomodation as we stayed about a 5min walk away. The staff we excellent and the food was amazing. Although they run out of white bait as a starter the chef offered a mix of calamari and what white bait was left. Can't fault the food and the staff. As a table of 11 it was amazing and they were hosting a party also. Well done to all staff on Saturday night. Oh if you visit, I would recommend the scotch egg starter, stunning. Well done
