Saxon Arms

P: 01305 260020

Rating: 4.6 (686) Price Level:

Lovely Christmas dinner. The food was very nice but there was so much of it it was hard to enjoy it. My feedback would be to have the veg in dishes on the table so we can pick out how much we need. Would save a lot of waste and far easier to eat as not so much. The staff are always very welcoming and friendly x

We’ve been coming to the Saxon Arms for years, and with good reason: the pub is lovely, the welcoming service from all the staff is exemplary and the food is a cut above the average. I don’t normally write reviews, especially for places I visit frequently, however I ordered the Beef Wellington for lunch today from their varied specials board and it was simply superb. It’s a favourite dish, but I rarely have it when I’m out as it’s easy to mess up - tiny steaks that are overcooked and pastry that’s soggy and tasteless, and the whole lot is more often than not outrageously overpriced, but today’s was outstanding. It was beautifully presented, perfectly cooked and tasted fabulous. The last Beef Wellington I had that was this good was at Hawksmoor in Spitalfields, a world away from this relaxed, quiet country pub in the middle of Dorset. I can honestly say that the Saxon Arms never fails to meet expectations and would always get my hearty recommendation, but today’s lunch was worthy of an establishment charging many times more for its food. Outstanding.

We did enjoy coming here, however the food wasn't up to par this time round. It was super busy ( Christmas) and for the price, I expected something more treat worthy. First time we visited. The food was tremendous, hence the revisit and I felt spoiled which is how we should feel when choosing to eat out. This saddened me because I thought we had found a real gem 💎. Sorry guys x

What a lovely place in a picturesque setting. From the initial welcome we were made to feel right at home. The staff were brilliant and very helpful. We had the Sunday lunch which was great value and delicious. Top marks for the cauliflower cheese! 👏 Really enjoyed our visit and will be going back.

As a regular visitor to the hall every week teaching Pilates I love the size and feel of this joyful hall. It has all the amenities you'll ever need and more. New boiler is a bonus and the staff are helpful and friendly. What's not to like?

We have had two birthdays there now and the cost of the hall hire was excellent. The facilities are really user friendly and the lady who runs the bookings is helpful and quick in replying. Would be great for a larger gathering like a wedding, anniversary or a large family get together. It backs on to the river for wonderful pictures and with a large well stocked kitchen you could cater yourself or know that a outside company would be well supplied.

Lovely village hall built in 1936 and more recently extended to include a kitchen area. Known for the regular Frampton Footlights plays and pantomimes, and the legendary 'Frampton fine dining' evenings, this place is a social hub for all the OAPs in Frampton and Southover. Expect a warm welcome and cup of tea when you visit!

Rating: 4.7 (360) Price Level:

My husband and I were on holiday in Cerne Abbas and came across this very special place on our first day walk. What a wonderful find, we were warmly received by Annette and Julian, who showed a great interest in us and where we had come from and checking out where we may visit while in Dorset. We loved this place so much we visited 4 times for evening drinks and meals. The recommendations for local beers, wine and Gin were excellent. They were always interested on our daily adventures. We can honestly say the place had a wonderful vibe with pleasant background music not to loud, and listening to the local banter was heart- warming. Also lovely to see all dog visitors getting doggy treats from the owners. Always served with a smile The food was absolutely delicious, they have a very talented chef, the presentation and food portions were spot on and there was no waste from us ! Thank you for a marvellous time at The new Inn and we will be back again soon and will definitely book a stay as well . If we could give you 6 stars we would

We stayed over the bank holiday in Aug and it’s so quiet and peaceful. Food was amazing and my husband said it was the best breakfast. All the staff went above and beyond especially Haley and another lady whose name we didn’t know. Fantastic little find.

We stayed here one night in early July ( visiting from Australia but born in Dorset).. A lovely atmospheric room with modern bathroom. We opted for dinner in the restaurant and had probably the best sunday roast we have ever had , roast beef done just right with yorkshire pud my mother would be proud of - high praise indeed! Accompanied by a range of vegetables that were great but almost too many to finish. Ditto for Breakfast the following day . Staff ( owners? ) took great pride in this establishment and delightful to boot. So thoroughly recommend the New Inn. .

This is easily becoming my favourite cafe in Weymouth. The location is great, just moments from the harbour side in the bustling brewers quay area. They have a sizeable outside seating area for those dry days and a cosy dining area inside. The staff are wonderfully accommodating and lovely with our children, they are always offered colouring books and numerous high chairs are available. Now the food...it is lovely. It is all vegetarian or vegan, but even as a meat lover I always find something to eat. A personal favourite is the poutine, fries with melted cheese covered in the most delicious mushroom gravy - it is gorgeous! The extensive waffle menu is a firm hit with all ages, with choices to suit all. From waffles doused in chocolate to lovely fruit toppings. If you are in the area, I would wholeheartedly suggest you pop by for lunch.

Thank you for accommodating us as walk-ins for the Sunday Roast. The food was delicious, the staff were welcoming, the atmosphere was warm, relaxed and peaceful (some places can be very noisy during afternoon roast dinners). We have also tried the outdoor seating previously for some nibbles and the review remains exactly the same. We really enjoyed on both occasions and we will definitely return.

We found The Sun Inn on google maps last minute, are plans had changed. What a find, lovely welcome and a very nice carvery , roast beef or turkey loads of veg all hot and fresh. I recommend booking in advance as it was very busy, they squeezed us in on a barrel table, not suitable for everyone, we didn’t mind they asked us first.

Visited The Sun Inn whilst staying in a holiday cottage 5 mins walk away. We booked in for a second time that week because we enjoyed it so much! Highly recommend the carvery, it was delicious. Can’t fault the staff, they were all lovely and so attentive. Great atmosphere, and great pub in general. Would suggest booking in advance because it’s very popular.

We popped in for a spot of lunch while visiting sights around Dorchester. The landlady of the cottages we rented highly recommended the pub and even contacted them about allergens in their foods to help support one of our party who is suffering some medically induced food issues at the moment. The staff were absolutely superb and did everything they could to ensure we had an excellent experience there. The food was typical pub grub, but at its finest and the prices were absolutely spot on. We will be visiting again.

We popped in for Guinness at lunchtime and really enjoyed our visit primarily because of the very friendly locals. It was my birthday and we decided to come back in the evening for dinner. Unfortunately our second visit was completely different from our first. My partner had anchovies for a starter which were lovely and beef scrumpet for his main, I had rump steak with chips. We had never heard of scrumpet, it was a thick square of brisket that had been coated in breadcrumbs and fried. I asked for my steak medium rare, but it was dry and over cooked. I had mine returned to the kitchen so another could be prepared. This meant my partner ate his dinner on his own. My dinner returned and it was perfect, but I ate mine on my own. It wasn’t the birthday dinner I had hoped for. No discount was offered, or complimentary dessert. Very disappointing!

I visited this pub on Sunday on a staycation in Dorset, we just popped in, and were very pleasantly surprised. A girl named Ruby served us & recommended some cider for us (as we’re not from the area) which was great. She was so personable and helpful and made our experience great. Amazing service, thank you for your hospitality.

After an emotional day, my partner and I decided we would stay over and booked our room on line. On arriving quite late, we received a very warm welcome and despite the kitchen having already closed, were offered fish and chips without hesitation. Our host did check with the kitchen first but it seemed absolutely no trouble. The rooms were worthy of the most historic public house but still provided all the home comforts one could wish for. After a comfortable nights sleep, interrupted only by the effects of alcohol consumes throughout our day, we descended the stairs to have breakfast. Eggs Benedict and cooked to perfection. The spread was fantastic and would satisfy the biggest of eaters and overall, the standard of what was offered was far in excess of expectations. Would recommend without hesitation and when we return to this quaint little place, we will definitely be booking our room here!

My partner and I spent the New Year at the Duchess of Cornwall Inn and had an enjoyable stay. The room had plenty of character, and the staff were exceptionally friendly and accommodating. We also dined at the hotel's pub/restaurant, which was a nice experience. Conveniently located in the heart of Poundbury, the hotel is just a short stroll from Dorchester. On arrival, after making a online booking, we were nearly turned away as staff said there was no reservations in our name, we had to prove it was booked from our online correspondence. Staff then found us a table, but advised us we had to go because that table was booked out at a certain time. We had our main meal, but didn't have a desert as we would have outstayed our welcome, only to find that upon leaving most of the restaurant was practicly empty, very disappointing. Apart from the above, the food and service was very good.

Just had a two night stay here at this beautifully presented pub/b&b. Staff were friendly and helpful, always polite. Room was clean and had everything we needed. It’s on the train line which doesn’t feel intrusive. The food was really nice in the evenings (didn’t eat lunch there), we were a big group one evening and there were two small issues but they were sorted. The first morning, arrived to breakfast and it wasn’t ready and staff didn’t know why, they quickly sorted it out tho. The only downside for us was breakfast, as there is no hot option.

Lovely place, nice spacious rooms with air conditioning, decent telly and comfortable bed. Very clean and tidy, with a nice powerful shower. I really had to dig deep to find any fault with the place, and the only thing I did find wrong was that the toilet roll holder was was a bit loose. The continental breakfast had a good range of food, and was a nice way to start the day.

I must say, for a quick travel-home lunch, this was fantastic. You can clearly see why for such a little spot why they're so busy! For £15.95, a simple roast dinner with ample flavour. Homemade treats and lovely coffee. What a pleasure to have popped in on a whim. The staff were very attentive, despite being ridiculously busy, they made such an effort to be kind and helpful to all. Especially the older gent who was doing front of house, clearing tables and welcoming guests... rushed off his feet but was SOOO friendly which was lovely.

Great range of food from snacks to full meals, my wife had the club sandwich and that was really good as well as my bun, and even better the bacon was not smoked - I cannot understand why some places use smoked bacon as it puts off half the possible consumers! The staff were attentive and polite, fixed our rocking table before we asked, loads of space and good value. There is also a covered outside area but you need sun!

The Coeliac Blogger: I've eaten in this cosy cafe before and as a Coeliac they can provide a good range of gluten free options, sadly like many places have no proper gluten free cakes available unless it's in a tiny packet, selling the usual chocolate options which I don't like, they need to have a couple of gluten free sliced cakes available. It's worth going and nice coffee on offer. Definitely room for improvement,
