“Had the pleasure of sampling the Game Tasting menu last night. Every dish was a delight with locally sourced produce, lovely service and ambiance. Highly recommend! I forgot to photograph the terrine starter and remembered to photograph the wild duck pie before I ate too much of it!”

“Lovely place in a great location in Matlock. Been for a couple of meals before which have always been nice, but never got around to trying the famous carvery until today. So glad we came, the food was amazing, and so much variety.Everything was hot and well cooked. Staff were really friendly and everything was well organised. It was very busy and because there was 2 of us with a dog we had to queue separately which would have meant we’d probably be eating at different times, but after I’d got mine I was told to send my wife to the front of the queue so we could dine together, I thought that was very thoughtful and a nice touch. I must say Thankyou (and sorry) to the bar lady who cleared our plates and was really friendly, my clumsy wife managed to spill half a pint of lager not only on the floor but managed to decorate half the wall too. Thanks again for your assistance, I’ll be leaving the wife at home next time.”

“Stopped here for lunch and the food is fantastic. Service with a smile and a really lovely cosy country pub. Parking is very limitednand quite tight so often easier to park on nearby streets, but be mindful of residents driveways. Definitely worth the drive for the food!”

“Lovely staff and good food. We went with a party of 8 and the staff were very accommodating and you should definitely book ahead with a big party. The food was good with the recommendation of the lamb kofta flatbread being the tastiest one. Dog friendly pub.”

“New Head Chef and new menus. We booked for his second evening service. It's a set menu of 2 course £38 or 3 course £45. With lovely homemade bread and butter to start. For starters we chose the Chicken Terrine and Joe's hand dived scallops which were absolutely delishes. Mains were Cornish Cod,Brassicas,Chard,Smoked Roe. Beef loin & cheek, Celeriac, White onion. A dessert of Chocolate ,70% Valrhona Chocolate, Espresso, Clotted Cream. And a delightlighfully large plate of cheeses. The menu will change depending on what fresh local produce is delivered. The food was perfectly executed, as expected from a young talented chef such as Adam.It was great to meet him again and to see him back in action. Staff were pleasant and professional. The pub is part of Berkeley Inns, which is a small pub group with some other great venues. They are clearly aiming high with this new head chef appointment for their casual fine dining. We'll look forward to see how they develop and the word gets out. Future awards and accolades are on the horizon for sure.”

“We stayed a couple of nights and ate a meal both evenings. What a treat! The rooms were first class. Extremely comfortable, spacious with White Company toiletries. From the moment we walked through the door the service was exemplary. We felt welcome and there was no delay at check-in. The evening meals were delicious and there was a good selection on the menu. A very relaxing atmosphere. A top class pub and hotel well deserving of our 5* rating. We can’t wait to return!”
