Reviews
Today I was researching my family tree and found that a distant relative had lived in nearby Fisher Lane pre 1900. It evoked the days that I spent as a guest at Dunsfold of Guy and Freddie in May 2022. They offered an excellent evening meal each day and I was pleased to share my bottle of Siesta Key rum. It was the least I could do as they'd made me so comfortable. The best of UK B&B.
Absolutely wonderful host! Guy really makes you feel at home and is very welcoming. He also provides a fantastic breakfast. Lovely location, and beautiful historic building to stay in. There is also a very sweet dog called Winston who loves to get cuddles and play with all the guests. Really feels like a cozy home.
The B and B Dunsford (Hurst Hill) was an interesting stay… the older portion of the house we stayed in was well over 500 years old and it was made with used wood (maybe from ships), some of the used timber was determined by a carpenter to be as much as 1000 years old. The doors were very short in the old section… I brought home many souvenirs from the house on the front of my head… I had a very large collection of lumps. I hit my head on the way in and on the way out… not smart enough to learn to duck. The stay was perfect in every way. The room was very nice and had a private bath. The owner’ dog (Winston) was very nice and good company. The location was remotely located south of London down single track roads which turned to gravel at the end. The road was in good shape compared to many we experienced in the U.K. It was very quiet at night and we slept well. The location was perfect to make short trips to see all the sights to the west, south and south east of London. Guy was an excellent host and he could cook. We were always invited to the family dinner in the evening and joined his family and the other guests at a large table and enjoyed several very nice meals with great conversation, there is a cost of 15.00 pounds or so per guest for the evening meal; but, it was well worth the money. Breakfast came with the cost of the stay and it was perfectly prepared with fresh bread still warm from the oven which went very well with free range chicken eggs, sausage, mushrooms and bacon. The gardens were beautiful and quite extensive around the property. Allen was an 89 year old gardener that knew what he was doing and managed to raise perfectly beautiful flowers and plants. He was one of those slow but steady types and was able to accomplish as much as a young man. His efforts resulted in many beautiful types of flowers and the smell of roses all around the property made the stay even more pleasant.
Guy is a generous and engaging host. We were greeted with the offer of a cup of tea or a glass of wine and shown our rooms. We enjoyed a delicious supper of Boeuf Bourguignon with mash and fresh vegetables, sitting with Guy, his son and a lodger, at an old oak table under the watchful eyes of the portraits of Guy's great grandparents. The Elizabethan house with charming beams and Tudor-style windows is characterful. It is a longstanding family home (Guy himself was born in it). The house, annex, and side buildings are set in a pretty garden. It is the last house down the somewhat pot-holed, hawthorn-lined lane after the farm. Guy (and his lodger, Russell) are accomplished cooks - as well as the dinner, we enjoyed a superb English breakfast with good scrambled egg, nice local bread, etc... The B&B is homely rather than grand, and you will be treated as part of the household (unless you choose stay away in your room or the annex). It is worth noting that the house has the air of a bachelor pad, with some resultant paraphernalia and idiosyncrasies, and there is Winston, a friendly yellow lab, who a welcoming host, but worth being aware of if you are nervous of dogs. Excellent WiFi. Free, easy parking.
