My 20 year old E46 BMW broke down about a mile away from home as I was driving through Tring at about 8:30am. I had a quick look for nearby garages as the car was still drivable, albeit overheating. Managed to limp the car to The Old Dairy and explained briefly what happened… Small thump under the engine whilst driving, battery warning light came on immediately, lost power steering and then the temperature gauge started creeping up. Within seconds of explaining the gentleman walked outside to the car and knew the likely problem straight away. He reached into the engine bay and pulled out the drive belt which was sheared in two. The lady at the desk said they were very busy and so wouldn’t likely be able to do anything with the car for a few days but they would call me as soon as they could. All of which was fine as I didn’t have any other options aside from getting the car recovered, which from experience can be a headache! Not expecting a call until after the weekend, I was very surprised when at 4 oclock that very same afternoon, I received a call to say my car was ready to collect! Admittedly they did say they wouldn’t have usually got the car sorted that quickly but they managed to squeeze it in due to a cancellation and the fact that they had a new belt available without needing to order. I was charged £25 for the belt and a single hour’s labour at £75+VAT so I was absolutely delighted. I left the car there expecting to have to fork out a lot more. When your car breaks down you think it’s going to be a bad day but actually it turned out to be a pretty good one as I’ve found a new garage that I absolutely will not hesitate to take my car back to again in future.
