When we set about building our retirement home some years ago we were rigorous in researching the reputation of those who would do the work. As we'd decided not to employ a builder but to supervise the construction ourselves, we were very much in the hands of individual contractors, so their skills and trustworthiness were fundamental. The house, set in the heart of a lovely country estate, was the apogee of a lifelong dream for me and my husband -- to make an English home that was classical but not a pastiche. Of all the design elements, we realised, one of the most critical in determining real quality would be the woodwork. The contractor we chose to deliver that was West Oak Joinery, a well-established family-run local firm. It was quickly evident to us that owner Trevor Cox and his obliging, skilful staff had both the capacity and imagination -- and the patience -- to turn our vague concepts into elegant reality. At every level their handiwork was perfect; usefully large polished English oak doors framed in pleasingly wide architrave, exquisite wainscotting, radiator boxing and panelling, glazed dining-room cupboards, built-in library shelving and a graceful, imposing staircase; everywhere workmanship of the highest order, expertly installed and, after years in place, showing no sign of movement. We used Garden City Carpentry and Builds for a wrap around extension and we would thoroughly recommend them to friends and family. They only take on one big job at a time and are fully dedicated to your build. They are on site for a full day and Tony was always available to answer questions. They are very trust worthy and when we hit problems at the beginning of our build they helped us work through it rather than just walking off site or charging us through the nose. Apart from some small additional cost due to the delay they came in bang on their original estimation they gave us so no surprises. I honestly wouldn't use another building company!

As a single female I have met and paid a fair few cowboy builders and was very sceptical of finding another builder however I was pleasantly surprised after being given Trevor Wards number. I was after someone to lay a patio in my back garden, Trevor was very polite, started early and worked a full day and most importantly his workmanship was top quality. Lakes Carpentry and Builders have converted my garage into a room for my model railway layout. This work included moving a door, installing insullation, new floor, ceiling and walls. Building storage and a basebooard to build the tracks over. They have also built a new brick built shed and replaced the facia on the rear of the garage. I am very happy with their work.

We’ve used Lakes builders for two jobs, a garage conversion with a small but complex extension and then additional internal improvements including new doors throughout the house. We received clear quotes and information at each stage, with excellent ideas given by Bill to ensure a seamless integration of the extension with the rest of the house. We found Bill and all his team to be friendly and professional with high quality workmanship. Whenever a snag was found Bill always had suggestions for how we could address it. Despite being faced with a tight and difficult space on a moving boat, Terry designed and made the perfect solution to our storage problems very quickly and efficiently. Bryan has completed two separate pieces of work for me, both to a really high quality. Firstly outside house maintenance and then a refit if my kitchen. He is a very talented craftsman, I was really impressed with his professionalism and standard of his work. He also worked well with other contractors involved and left every clean, tidy and is a really nice guy. I’d highly recommended him.

I've used Bryan a number of times now. He's fitted wooden flooring through downstairs, replaced kitchen work tops and most recently fitted an oak beam above my fireplace. I can't recommend him enough. Great workmanship, great guy and has always left the place clean and tidy.. Hightly recommend!!

We contacted Bryan for the fitting of two new interior doors. After a speedy response a home visit appointment was made so I could show Bryan exactly what I needed doing.
