“When we set about building our retirement home some years ago we were rigorous in researching the reputation of those who would do the work. As we'd decided not to employ a builder but to supervise the construction ourselves, we were very much in the hands of individual contractors, so their skills and trustworthiness were fundamental. The house, set in the heart of a lovely country estate, was the apogee of a lifelong dream for me and my husband -- to make an English home that was classical but not a pastiche. Of all the design elements, we realised, one of the most critical in determining real quality would be the woodwork. The contractor we chose to deliver that was West Oak Joinery, a well-established family-run local firm. It was quickly evident to us that owner Trevor Cox and his obliging, skilful staff had both the capacity and imagination -- and the patience -- to turn our vague concepts into elegant reality. At every level their handiwork was perfect; usefully large polished English oak doors framed in pleasingly wide architrave, exquisite wainscotting, radiator boxing and panelling, glazed dining-room cupboards, built-in library shelving and a graceful, imposing staircase; everywhere workmanship of the highest order, expertly installed and, after years in place, showing no sign of movement.
