The Poet at Matfield

Rating: 4.7 (652) Price Level:

Our favourite spot in Kent! The Poet is consistently excellent: wonderful service, superb quality dishes The menu changes periodically depending on local produce availability, but is always exquisite, a real treat every time we go. I love that they offer a dog friendly table in the bar (if you ring ahead to book, and your doggo is well behaved) Garden is also lovely for a drink before/after food inside šŸ‘Œ Highly recommend.

Get in quick before it gets a star. Service- relaxed but very professional Drink - well recommended Food - for Ā£100 a head in London easily. Seriously superb food. The dishes take you on a journey the team design and deliver on. Went for a birthday, will now ā€œhave to go backā€ to regularly check quality.

Attended last night for birthday surprise and wasn't disappointed. The staff were very attentive throughout the evening. Head Chef Lee has created a menu which is a delight. The menu to make a decision which of the 5 starters & 6 mains to choice was extremely hard as I could and was tempted to have one of each. The food was as good as u can get the flavours were exquisite. The pairing of wine is a great idea. You will not be disappointed in booking here. Will be returning.

I came here for an anniversary meal and it didn't disappoint. Don't let the exterior pub-like look fool you. On the inside, it's a fine dining experience. Incredible food and service. The only reason it gets 3 stars for the atmosphere is because we went on a Monday which was very quiet. Will definitely be back for the tasting night which sounded excellent.

We have become regulars here over the past few weeks - the staff are friendly, kind and helpful, there is always a positive buzz whatever time of day you're here and the food is delicious. For fellow vegans and people who are gluten free, there are gf and vegan options available. Leah's has become our favourite place to visit at the weekend - If you haven't been to Leah's before, treat yourself!

We really enjoyed our experience today at Leahā€™s bistro. Thereā€™s a lot of choice on the menu, something for everyone, and everything is freshly made and cooked. We really enjoyed the food, it was delicious! Prices are really reasonable too - 2 adults, 2 kids - lunch (sandwich and panini, 2 x kids meals), drink and cake each, worked out at about Ā£40. Definitely will come back. Staff are lovely as well, really friendly.

A few years ago (different owners I believe), this place was not much to shout about. But now it's a regular breakfast venue for me and business colleagues. The service is always excellent, swift and welcoming. The coffee is very good and the food... well, we wouldn't go back if it wasn't great every time! Pictured is my beans on toast, which isn't actually on the menu but is never any trouble. My friend has the vege breakfast which he assures my is top notch.

Had a fantastic experience here. The food was great and of good quality. Portions were more than generous and especially for a kids roast. The atmosphere was very unexpected with someone playing the piano by the entrance. People working there were all very fun and bubbly to be around and engaged with the kids too.

Update 2024 December Had a roast lunch which was promptly ordered and served by polite very hard working staff. It was plentiful in size but could have been heated a little more evenly, this was Ā£12 there was an OAP option for Ā£10 which was smaller apparently. I though the cheese cake a bit expensive for its size Ā£3.95. Update 2023 Staff were friendly and patient. We had a roast lunch each which was served very hot, portion size were just adequate. They were amazingly quick at delivering our meal after order.

Good little cafe, great selection of drinks and delicious cakes, staff are friendly. We come here mostly lunchtime as we work nearby for a takeaway milkshake and/or sausage roll/sandwich. Parking just round the corner in the free library car park is recommended rather than on the road.

We had a birthday afternoon tea at the cafe for my daughter and 10 of her friends. Olga sat down with me to plan the menu, the food was great and kids were happy.. we had the upstairs to ourselves after the cafe was closed and the food was good and reasonably priced. We also did this 3 years ago and Iā€™m sure will do again for future birthdays! Many thanks to friendly staff for staying open late for us!

We visited on a Saturday evening for a family birthday. The food was great and good service. Desserts were nice and big, sadly I didnā€™t get a picture before we dug in! Lovely classic pub atmosphere. Would be good if they had menus as you have to read off the board which an older guest found difficult, but ultimately we had a lovely meal. Will be returning.

A great spot to enjoy the atmosphere in Tonbridge with a view of the castle and river just off the high street. I brought my family from Germany who had reservations about British food and the food they had changed their opinion completely. The service was wonderful and we felt very welcome. The coffee was great and the staff knowledgeable and helpful, so we all got exactly the drink we needed.

This is probably the best place to go for coffee in Tonbridge, I'm not been anywhere else in Tonbridge so I can't say anyone is better. What I would say is that this place is hard to beat in Tonbridge for speciality coffee. It serves I believe it's own bespoke blend by cast iron coffee, based in Sussex. The view out the front window of the castle is pretty good too. I have also been to its previous premises in Tonbridge which was the old fire station, both places serve excellent coffee. 'nuff said!

Called in here whilst visiting friends, we now live in Lincoln. Great place and dog friendly. Weather not too bad, for a change, and sat outside on the astro turf overlooking the river. I used to live near here and know the brave hearted swim, jumping from the bridge šŸ˜². Greatly entertaining, I am sure but no one performing todayšŸ˜§. Barry and I both had a delicious ham, tomato, pickle sandwich in great brown bread coupled with a generous portion of chips. Reasonably priced with a glass of wine and pint of beer. Lovely in Winter with a wood burning stove in bar. No problem with parking. Would definitely return.

Organising a surprise birthday for a load of people can be tricky. My mum was given only a short time to live because of cancer so we did not think she would see another birthday. Needless to say, Nikki and her team at the Unicorn went above and beyond to make the evening feel so special. Nothing was too much trouble for them. Special made area of nibbles, decorations, party food table and so much more. Honestly, this was a night to remember. Nikki, I want to thank you and your team from the bottom of my heart for a wonderful evening!

Beautifully presented pub restaurant Food doesnā€™t get much better than that served at the Unicorn Pub and Restaurant. I love to take a snap or 50 of pubs; at the Unicorn it was the food that stood out. Inside, the interior is fresh with a mix of modern bright trinkets and farming equipment (just to make you aware you are in a country pub). The restaurant is humble, beaming from the light pouring in though itā€™s small windows. It is separate, but open to the bar area. The staff were humble, professional, chatty and courteous. The menu consists of a focussed range of traditional foods presented in their menu and on their specials board. Food arrived quickly and delivered accurately. Another great pub experience, The Unicorn crafts traditional foods beautifully in a refreshingly modern setting.

Very pleased to stop off at this pub for a Sunday Lunch. Traditional, relaxed and cosy pub. Everything you would expect in terms of drinks. We were impressed with the Sunday Roast. Large portions of meat accompanied by a range of well cooked vegetables (not overdone). One person had the fish and chips which was also very tasty. Reasonable prices for the portion size.

Came here for lunch on a Saturday. Set in a lovely location with good walks nearby. Wasn't particularly busy which was perfect to have a good selection of seating and fast service. In my view the food menu isn't particularly inspiring but everything we had was freshly prepared and well cooked. Great for children, particularly because of the ice cream machine and milkshakes.

Although we have lived only walking distance from this wonderful establishment, this was the first time we visited... And we weren't disappointed. Mrs and I, and our dog (yes, dogs are allowed but best to let them know in advance) on a Friday evening for "Steak night". The place was busy, but nice busy. Very cosy and warm. The service was excellent, with the landlady being very attentive. The food was lovely and the steak was delicious. However, my favourite was the Scotch Egg started. Proper home made, yolk was beautifully soft. I could have eaten ten! Would definitely visit and recommend this place. Thank you for a lovely evening.

Set by the beautiful waterways in the quiet town of Loose, there is no better setting for a pub. The Chequers Inn is undoubtedly a proper pub, 17th Century and beaming inside and and out. The pub is centred around the bar area with peripheral seating areas for those wanting to have tired feet or want to enjoy traditional pub food. I like The Chequers Inn style, it doesnā€™t try hard to meet the needs of check lists and social media review systems. It is a laid back, warm & welcoming atmosphere within which to enjoy well prepared pub grub. The food menu is traditional at its core, but does nod to the flamboyant with its french inspired fish dishes. The presentations the food is excellent overall. I admired my main course, the Salmon Nicoise, for an indeterminable amount of time before devouring it. There is always room to improve things, but the Chequers shouldnā€™t. It has a refreshing charm that many of the chain pubs lack.
