Visiting family from New Zealand. Heard this place was good to eat. Booked a table for last night, kids menu was great and my children enjoyed the food. Adults meals, cocktails and wine all very good, generous portions. The waiting staff were attentive and helpful. Well oiled machine indeed. Thank you ☺️

The pub is located on the main road with plenty of parking spaces nearby. We went to have dinner to celebrate my birthday and we were pleased with our choice. They've prepared a birthday card on the table for me. The food was delicious , we can definitely recommend the burgers and the sweet potato fries. Excellent choice in Yeovil!

I visited for a Sunday carvery with my family and from the moment we stepped through the front door everything was spot on. The service is impeccable and the food superb. What made the service extra special was that my mother was sadly unable to be there at the last minute, however the Pen Mill staff were amazing and arranged a takeway caevery meal plated up even with a pot of gravy. We took it back home and my mother was extremely grateful. A brilliant piece of customer service which was the cherry on an already delicious cake. Well done to everyone.

Visited with friends today for a Sunday lunch. A very pleasant experience. Reception dealt efficiently with the booking and queries before the day. The room was comfortable, the decor was contemporary and the service good. There was a slight delay between bringing the main course and the vegetables arriving, but the food was excellent and the plates were hot. We will definitely return and wish we had found you earlier.

This hotel is absolutely stunning! The pictures do not do it justice. The hotel is charming, beautiful, unique, vintage and quirky. There is lots to see around the hotel and it was beautifully decorated for Christmas. We booked for the festive getaway deal which was an amazing price for all it included, we upgraded our room prior to arriving and on arrival got told we were upgraded again for free which was a wonderful surprise. Our room was absolutely beautiful! The hotel was very peaceful and the food and drinks were delicious. Our room and the hotel was very clean. We absolutely love the friendly, cute hotel cat Neptune!! Breakfast didn't come with all items included on the menu (we didn't get any potatoes, mushrooms or tomatoes like stated) they also hadn't had their delivery of bacon so breakfast seemed a little chaotic, but other than that everything was perfect, staff were friendly and attentive and we absolutely cannot wait to come back and stay here again! I highly recommend this hotel, really beautiful and peaceful and great value for money.

We had a lovely one night stay at this independent hotel. The hotel is very quirky and really well thought out with lovely touches all around. I took my 2 children and they loved playing in the big garden and our room was very spacious with a huge bed and double sofa bed. The bar is really cosy and the food at dinner and breakfast was really lovely. All the staff were very welcoming and the resident cat was a huge hit with my daughters. The location was perfect for us, just a 5 minute drive to Sherborne but in a quiet village location. Would definitely recommend this hotel and would love to stay again.

A wonderful charming and welcoming entrance to the beautiful Compton Acres Gardens. The café and tea rooms are cute, open and casual eat in bakery that serves hot and cold food. Selection of dishes are simple such as soups, fish and chips, quiche and salad and sandwiches. They have an enormous selection of cakes and drinks. They also sell made to order cakes from the selection they sell and extremely reasonable prices. We ordered a signature caramel & raspberry 9" cake for £35 with custom message on. Lovely for impromptu treat.

I just love the tranquility of this place. In the heart of a big tourist focus town, Compton Acres provides a surprisingly peaceful opportunity to relax and wander around beautiful and perfectly maintained gardens. Woodlands areas, a formal Italian garden, Japanese garden and well laid out ponds / streams all make this a great afternoon out. Very recommended.

I always thought of this place as mainly for coach trips and weddings... totally wrong! There's so much here! Hard to know where to start. Gardens are 10 acres separately themed. Winding paths take you through the valley, densely planted with a fantastic variety of species it's a joy. Despite being Feb there was plenty to see. The formal areas are truly stunning. Kids will love the tunnels, bridges and stepping stones. Plus there's a whole play area in the woods. Views from the top of the gardens are incredible. Interesting sculptures everywhere, great fun trying to spot them all. One visit is not enough to take it all in. They also have a huge shopping space. Local things, plants, kids toys, gifts and an Italian deli. Could have spent hours browsing. Cafe was clean with lots of lunch options. Plenty of seats inside and out. Staff were the absolute best. Kind and welcoming. Can't wait to go back in the summer!

Compton McRae

Unit 2, Chaldicott Barns, Semley, Shaftesbury SP7 9AW, UK | Deli
P: 01747 448750

Rating: 4.6 (152) Price Level:

Attended a wake for an old friend's wife with maybe 150 people present on a Sunday. An extraordinary experience with impeccable food, drink and service. The food had obviously been carefully thought out to provide excellence in taste, quality and presentation. Despite a sudden torrential downpour the well trained and unobtrusive staff coped immaculately. Though the occasion could have been sombre Compton MacRae carried it off superbly and perfectly set the tone. Very well done: you deserve all the success that is coming to you.

Great food, lovely staff. Gluten free options. Just not set up for less mobile people. Rough gravel that made wheeled walkers v difficult to push, steep ramp up. Hazardous. I watched 3 people struggle in. The food must be good! No disabled loo despite lots of space for it. Loos 50 yards away over same gravel. Can drive to them. C'mon people put a paved path to the entrance, get a more gently inclined ramp and put a couple of collapsible bars on the wall behind the loo to aid standing. Lots of customers aren't that young anymore.

We came here for a lunch and the food was lovely. We ordered two double charcuterie and cheese boards, and these came with a decent amount of food on them. A special mention to the butternut squash and miso soup, it was delicious. Dogs are welcome as long as they stay in the restaurant. The service was a bit slow and our order was messed up but corrected by staff. The atmosphere was nice under the marque and it was warm. There were plates left out on numerous tables, and the staff rushed around and appeared a bit over worked!

The food here is really delicious. I had a “porky burger” which was one of the best burgers I’ve had. The inside is very small with not a lot of seating but they do take away. Unique place in Sherborne but slightly on the pricier side - I think the quality of the food was worth it

Lovely late lunch. Quality food and friendly, accommodating staff. The outside looks fairly drab and some of the Italian signage is slightly incongruous (are Wadsworths synonymous with Italian dining? No), but don't be put off, the inside is far, far better with modern styling in a traditional setting. Not cheap but where is these days.

Absolutely gorgeous pub situated centrally in the lovely historic town of Sherborne in Dorset. The staff were so friendly and helpful. We stayed in The Hayloft for one night, like a lovely mini apartment overlooking the courtyard of the pub. Super comfy bed, great little bathroom and really lovely breakfast in the morning.

An incredible meal at the plume! We were turned away from another restaurant despite having a reservation, but when we came to the Plume they were happy to help and sat us promptly. The meal was absolutely delicious and filled us up nicely. We had 6 dishes between 4 adults and were stuffed! The service was great and the atmosphere was so lovely.

What a surprise treat! I visited this restaurant with family when staying in the area for a weekend away, and what a gorgeous find this was! Situated right in the heart of Sherborne (which is a charming town to visit regardless) this restaurant was just fabulous. The menu was fab, tapas dishes inspired by Italy but using West Country produce - what's not to love! Staff were friendly and accommodating, the drinks selection was vast and impressive and the food quality was truly 10/10. Would definitely be back if I lived closer! This place gets very busy over weekend so definitely book in advance, and also would recommend arriving for an earlier sitting rather than later before it gets too busy.

Dined here solo on a weekday evening. Atmosphere was lovely with the restaurant feeling very open to take advantage of the lovely weather. Rating: 4.6 (977) Price Level:

I've stayed at the Half Moon a couple of times, now as, I was working in the centre of Yeovil. This is a great location for that purpose- it's only about a 10 minute drive. The room was clean and well maintained and very importantly, the bed was very comfortable. The WiFi struggled occasionally with streaming, but was adequate for working and reading websites and it's free. Very friendly staff and a good breakfast, with plenty of cereals, fruit and yogurts available as well as toast, croissants and spreads/jams. Set me up nicely for the day.

Really good food, some places you get a huge portion, some places you get quality, I felt this was one of the rare times you get both. Lovely ambience, soon got busy as the evening went on. Staff friendly and pleasant. I had the rack of ribs and it was delicious, taste good but not sickly like some places do. Only downside to the whole place was no designated disabled parking, or if there was not clearly marked enough to find. Will definitely go again. Very enjoyable.

The quiet hours were from 10pm to 8.30am and they closed the gate to the rooms with signs up to make sure everyone knows. I don't think anyone else stayed as well as us as we were the only people at breakfast. Breakfast was cereal or porridge, yogurts, croissants, and toast. You could also have tea, coffee or juice.

Visiting our Son in Yeovil and decided to stay here instead of the premier inn. The rooms were basic but had everything you need for a night's stay. There was a bit of noise from neighbours closing doors but overall, for 80 quid it was a brilliant choice for us and only 5 mins from our lad. The place moved up a level when we popped back for the Sunday roast. It was packed but the friendly staff cleared a finished table quickly for us and we ordered the roast beef and the roast pork. It was a superb roast and the quality and quantity of food was staggering. My Son couldn't finish his roast as it was huge. Highly recommended and we will be booking again for our next visit.

Despite any negative reviews our stay was superb! Personally I've never felt so genuinely welcome and as a family, staff made us feel extremely welcome; nothing was too much and service was always considerate and personal. The rooms were mega comfortable, breakfast had ample choice, the bar had some fantastic choices, dinner was superb, there's ample parking and the area where your rooms are were quiet and private! Without a doubt if we were in the area again, this is where we would stay and we would happily recommend 🙂 Thank you 🙏🏽
