Canterbury Tails Cat Cafe
8 Mercery Ln, Canterbury CT1 2JJ, UK | Cat cafe P: Not available
Rating: 4.9 (576) Price Level:
I visited this dreamy cafe back in February and it was one of the most charming experiences I’ve ever had. The cafe was cosy, warm and in a wonderful location down a cobbled street towards the Cathedral. I had a lovely time meeting the playful and friendly cats. The plant based hot chocolate and cream tea I had was delicious and it was nice to be surrounded by a few peacefully sleeping cats for company as well. I very much recommend a visit if you are in Canterbury it’s a real treat. X

I went to the lovely cat cafe for my birthday in February, and for a general visit later in the year. And I loved every minute of it. The food and drinks were delicious, and seeing the sweet faces of all the cats was such an experience. Being at uni, I missed my cats back at home so it was so refreshing to see these gorgeous kitties. They are all so cared for by the team and I cannot wait to go again soon!
Rating: 5 / 5
One of the best decisions I’ve ever made was to spend two hours here during my trip to England last month. It starts with the perfect name, and things only get better from there. The staff are very friendly and helpful, and the cider and flapjack I had were delicious! Now we come to the cats. I spent most of my time with Waffle, a lovable Cornish Rex. He came right over and hopped in my lap. He stayed there for over an hour, which is basically my idea of heaven. I had the opportunity to meet or at least see most of the cats, and they are all wonderful! If you love cats, this is the place for you.
Rating: 5 / 5
I’ve been here a few times and they have only gotten better each time. The cats are in such good condition. It’s so lovely to see 28 cats living in a beautiful space. Not only that the food and drink is incredible. The staff are lovely and friendly. I cannot wait to go back again and enjoy looking at all the cute fluff balls. I fully support the owners of Canterbury Tails and what they are trying to do. 10 out of 10 with 100% recommend.

Visited with my friends for my birthday, in late August, & all of us absolutely loved it! The staff were super nice, the kitties were adorable & the chocolate cake is to die for! We got to look around and find the kitties hiding in different places, got to feed them, pet them and just look at them being adorable. Safe to say every single one of us walked out with a heart full of joy and planning when we will visit again! Thank you so much for having us!! ☺️

Rating: 4.7 (486) Price Level:
The paella was perfectly cooked, bursting with authentic flavours, and the tapas were delicious. The cosy atmosphere made it feel warm and inviting, perfect for a relaxed meal with friends or family. The service was outstanding—attentive, friendly, and made us feel welcome. If you’re looking for delicious Spanish cuisine with top-notch service in a charming setting, this is the place to go.

El Sol is a fantastic find near the cathedral, offering a cozy yet vibrant atmosphere. The paella is a must-try—worth the wait and absolutely delicious. The tapas were also top-notch, showcasing a variety of traditional Spanish flavors. The service was outstanding, with friendly and attentive staff who made the experience even better. Whether you're nearby or just passing through, El Sol is well worth a visit.

This restaurant is great with lovely Tapas and a very cosy feel. Really enjoyed the octopus, the chorizo and fab padron peppers. Took 1 star off as when it's busy, it's a bit tight for space. Our table on 15th November was right next to the bar area where everyone waits for their table. Try the food though!

Café Solo

Rating: 4.5 (740) Price Level:
If Google could do more than 5 stars this place would get it. Upon arriving I got welcomed at the front door and seated. I think it’s a family run business because they take pride in everything they do. Food was wonderful Staff polite Cafe very clean There’s only two cafe’s I would take my wife too and this is one of them.
Rating: 5 / 5
My family and I had a lovely breakfast in this cafe. The staff are very friendly and welcoming, special shout out to Megan 1.0 for looking after us so beautifully. I was so hungry I forgot to take a photo of my vegetarian breakfast (which was delicious). So I took this one off the outside seating area :)
Rating: 5 / 5
Me and my friends stopped by this lovely restaurant for lunch and it was absolutely amazing. The guy who served was so polite and the environment was so friendly. Cute interior giving out retro vibes. The food was in hearty portions and the cappuccino was out of my expectation! The froth was perfect and airy with the chocolate powder dusted evenly on top. I highly recommend this place if you want something simple but delicious.

I was really impressed with cafe solo. We went there for breakfast and I really couldn't fault the food - I wanted a good fry up and that's exactly what I got. The milkshake here is also some of the best I've had around Canterbury, actually made using ice cream with a dollop of cream on top. The only reason I haven't put 5 stars for the food is because it didn't wow me like my other 5 star reviews, but it was still very decent. The staff were super friendly but gave us the space we wanted to eat together, the space was clean, and we were even surprised with complimentary Turkish delight. Overall, would recommend. They have a small carpark, but there are supermarkets nearby.

Perfect little Cafe if you're in the Wincheap area, fair prices, huge portions, great flexibility on build your own breakfasts. They have an extensive menu and even offer smoothies if you want to counteract the fry up 😋 Polite and efficient staff, overall great experience again!

Nice little coffee & pastry shop. Bacon quiche was really nice. My partner ordered german sausage baguette - bread was really good but sausage & filling can be better. Fruit pie was fresh. Coffee & hot choc were standard. Staffs were friendly and place is cozy.

Great pastries and lovely service. Also very calm and coffesque, which is what I was going for.

Genuinely, one of the best cafes I have ever been in the UK. Nice service. The staff was very nice and friendly. The pastries and sweet were delicious and not too sweet. We really love the apple tart and custard cake. The atmosphere was lovely. I'd would definitely come back if I got a chance to visit Canterbury again.

The Cook's Tale Restaurant
14-15 Beer Cart Ln, Canterbury CT1 2NY, UK | Indian Restaurant P: 01227 200777
Rating: 4.7 (2157) Price Level:
My husband and I booked for the Indian high tea. It was on an offer and we love high tea, so we figured we would try it. It was all so amazing. There was a tone of variety of both sweet and savoury and the masala chai tea we got was very nice. The service was quick and attentive. Such a fun and unique twist- our favourite was the spiced chocolate cake and the potato sandwich. We cleaned our plates!
Rating: 5 / 5
We had a wonderful lunch at The Cook's Tale Restaurant in Canterbury! As soon as we arrived, we were greeted by Asher, our host, who was friendly, welcoming, and very knowledgeable about the menu. He made sure our dietary requirements were carefully addressed and guided us through the options. We opted for the Meat and Vegetarian Thali, and both were absolutely delicious — full of vibrant flavors and beautifully presented. What truly stood out was the exceptional service. During our meal, Chef Alfie came over to check on us, asking if we were enjoying our food and if we had any feedback. It was a lovely personal touch that made the experience even more memorable. The restaurant itself had a cosy, festive atmosphere, with Christmas decorations adding a warm touch to the environment. Overall, a fantastic dining experience, with excellent food, great service, and a welcoming ambience. Highly recommended!

Wonderful cuisine with amazing flavours and loads of tasty surprises. If you want a 5 star experience don't forget to book well in advance. Knowledgeable and friendly staff complete the experience. Not your average spice house. One of the best I have ever tasted. Enjoy !!

Wow, what an amazing experience. Came here for our 23rd anniversary meal, and went for the 12 course tasting menus with matched wines. After the first couple of courses I was a little worried that we would not be full by the end, but by the end of the tenth course we were both struggling to take another bite. Had the food not been so good, we may have given up, but it was amazing and we persevered, and now we are both uncomfortably full but so happy with what we have eaten. The service was impeccable, you rarely get it so good in this country. The food was rich, delicious and wholesome, and varied enough to keep the most eclectic palate happy. The wines were incredibly well paired, and each one delicious in their own right, but elevated to another level with the paired food. It is a little off the beaten track, but worth going out of your way to find. No regrets at all with choosing this marvellous restaurant, we will be singing praises to our friends and family and would heartily recommend to anyone.

I have been visiting The Cook’s Tale for at least eight years now and I always have a wonderful experience. The food is simply delicious! It's fine dining quality at a mid-range price. If you are able to take advantage of one of their monthly deals, it's insanely good value for money. The service has always been very attentive. As a vegetarian I love the quantity and variety of vegetarian dishes - it's clear they aren't some afterthought. Something else that I really appreciate about The Cook’s Tale is that unlike many other restaurants in a similar price range they don't automatically add gratuity to the bill, it's left to you to decide how much you want to tip. If you are considering visiting The Cook’s Tale, stop thinking and go now! You won't regret it.

Il Posticino
61 Dover St, Canterbury CT1 3HD, UK | Italian Restaurant P: 01227 788022
Rating: 4.7 (320) Price Level:
Absolutely amazing. From the moment we walked in the atmosphere was warm, friendly and welcoming. We were served by two fabulous, friendly people! The food! Wow. From the bread and olives to the ravioli, red mullet and sea food stew, not to mention to delicious panacota with mascapone and the fantastic cheese board. We cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough. We will be back 🤗😊

Canterbury's hidden gem! ...Perhaps that's why its still quiet... Lovely little restaurant. We’ll be going again (and again!). All the food was lovely, and the best pancetta ever!
Rating: 4 / 5
Really pretty dining room and nice and friendly environment. Classy but also comfortable. Very nice meal but we were waiting for almost 1 hour to get our food and had to order a couple of things twice because one of the waiters seemed a bit new and kept forgetting it. I highly recommend ordering desert, they are a true work of art and delicious as well.
Rating: 5 / 5
Absolutely amazing! A real italien restaurant with so much flavours. The staff is lovely and the food is really tasty. A nice choice of dishes - much enough to hesitate. We really enjoyed our venue (and we are french so imagine haha) We really recommend the wine as they it is served in a lovely glass and start with the focaccia it brings you directly in Italy Price is aligned with the quality of the food

Went as a couple. Didn't realize they open at 18:30 so we were just a little early. So if you do want an early dinner do consider this. The sitting area is upstairs. I couldn't tell if they have a lift so something to consider if you have mobility issues. We got to pick the table as we were the first to arrive.Waiters were attentive throughout our meal. The meal itself was lovely and beautifully presented, but I would say portion wise you probably need a starter, main sides or deserts to fill you up. This does mean the bill adds up. So would recommend it but be prepared to dig a little deeper into your pockets if you want to go away satisfied

Lazix café
10 Butchery Ln, Canterbury CT1 2JR, UK | Coffee Shop P: Not available
Rating: 4.7 (218) Price Level:
Lazix has quickly become my favourite place to visit in Canterbury for a cake and a catch up with friends. For five visits I've had quick, friendly service every single time. The menu has a great range of choices, although the chocolate orange cake is so addictively gorgeous that I tend to get that most of the time. It tastes like jaffa cakes turned into a tiered cake and is amazing! The outside seating upstairs on the terrace is also lovely in sunny weather. Highly recommend!
Rating: 4 / 5
Lovely cafe in the heart of Canterbury. The space inside is not a lot but there is a large covered terrace where it’s very pleasant to enjoy a meal or a drink. The food we ordered was nice, but the waiting time was quite long I would say (half an hour for some eggs). Nice cakes and teas too. I would stop again in a less busy day. Dog friendly.
Rating: 5 / 5
Lazix Café is a hidden gem! I thoroughly enjoyed their Benedict egg ham and delicious bagel, both bursting with flavor and prepared to perfection. The cafe boasts a great vibe and charming interior decoration, creating a cozy atmosphere perfect for relaxing or catching up with friends. Their coffee is also noteworthy—smooth, rich, and expertly brewed, it complements the tasty food offerings wonderfully. The staff at Lazix Café are friendly and attentive, ensuring a pleasant dining experience from start to finish. Whether you're stopping by for breakfast, brunch, or a casual coffee break, Lazix Café delivers on quality and ambiance. For a delightful culinary experience with great food, coffee, and ambiance, Lazix Café is definitely worth a visit. Five stars well-deserved!

Their cherry pie is the best dessert I have ever had in my entire life and I am not exaggerating that. I passed by this cafe and spotted the cake & pie display through their window. It looked so good that I turned right around and went in and ordered a cappuccino (they did not judge me for ordering one at 4pm, very kind of them) and the glorious cherry lattice pie. I can taste it even now months later as I write this review. I see it in my dreams. It was unlike the syrupy, overly sweet pies that tend to be the norm in America. It was tart and dense and the crust was rich and buttery and soft. It was so beautiful it looked like one of the pies you would see sitting on a windowsill in a children’s book. I have never written a love letter to a pie before but I am writing one now because that is what this pie inspired in me. After that life-changing slice I got a second one to go, and the box made the journey to the evening church service at the cathedral and on to the train station and all the way back to London as I could not bear the thought of not having a slice of this pie to look forward to, as I sadly must do now. I live in the US so the only solution is to make it myself. I have been looking for a recipe for months but haven’t yet found one that comes close. If you are luckier than me and are in Canterbury or will be in Canterbury soon you should do yourself a favor and try it.

Review: This café in Canterbury is clearly a local favorite, and it’s easy to see why! We visited during the early lunch hour, and it was buzzing with people, but there were plenty of tables available, including a cozy outdoor area with a covering. The service was excellent despite the busy atmosphere, and we had the best chai we’ve ever tasted—rich, aromatic, and perfectly spiced. Although we didn’t get a chance to try the food, the dishes we saw being served looked absolutely delicious. Definitely worth a visit for a great drink and lively ambiance!

The Foundry Brewpub - Canterbury Brewers and Distillers
77 Stour St., Canterbury CT1 2NR, UK | Pub P: 01227 455899
Rating: 4.5 (1204) Price Level:
Very nice brewery/pub. Friendly service! They looked well after us. Food was good, pubfood, not perfect. I bet the brisket hadn’t been smoked for 8 hours. It was tasty though. The beer tasting menu was very nice. Maybe better not served all at once.
Rating: 5 / 5
Excellent brewpub with a large selection of beers, four on cask the remaining 11 on keg. Great atmosphere and great beer. They also have a large selection of spirits distilled on site. I had the tasting paddle of 5 different beers in one third measures then tried 25ml of their single malt whisky. The Foundry black was my favourite beer and the whisky was delicious. I didn't eat here but the food served at the table next to me looked and smelt good. The staff were friendly, helpful and very efficient at their job. I'm very tempted to book myself on a tour next time I come to Canterbury.
Rating: 5 / 5
Super friendly staff and incredible food. The pie was delicious and SO big, such nice portions and reasonably priced. Great selection of drinks, highly recommended.
Rating: 5 / 5
My wife, kids, and I stayed in UK for an entire week for vacation and spent all of our time in London, Brighton, and Canterbury and this was the best meal by far that we had during our time in the UK. Their spirits and beers are brewed and distilled in-house and are all delicious! I highly recommend getting a flight of the infused gins and try a few half pints of their beers. It's all delicious. I personally had the Cajun chicken burger. 10/10 would definitely eat here again given the chance.
Rating: 4 / 5
The Foundry Brewpub is a good option for a Saturday afternoon. Perfectly acceptable, really. The food? Decent enough and good value for what you get. But here’s the thing—it just felt like it was missing that little spark. You know, the vibe that makes you want to settle in for a few hours and soak it all up. The atmosphere was a bit flat for my taste, but maybe I caught it on an off day. It’s certainly not unpleasant, just not exactly brimming with character. However, there’s one thing that will definitely leave an impression—the toilets. Oh yes, the mysterious “combo trap.” I won’t spoil it for you, but let’s just say navigating the facilities here is an experience in itself.

Café des Amis
95 St. Dunstans St, Canterbury CT2 8AA, UK | Mexican Restaurant P: 01227 464390
Rating: 4.7 (1867) Price Level:
Friendly staff, fun decor and delicious food. First time visiting and am new to Mexican foods so the staff helped me understand the menu items better to make my choice. Went for the spinach leek and cheese tacos and they were so good and paired wonderfully with the beans and guac. Excited to return and try more!
Rating: 5 / 5
Great food, quick and friendly service with a cosy ambience. The Lamb Stew that I had was delicious and the accompanying salsa was fresh with the right amount of spice. Left feeling full and Happy!
Rating: 5 / 5
This is the best meal I’ve had in Canterbury and I understand why this restaurant has lasted so long. It’s one of the busiest restaurants too so you do have to book (it was packed even on a dreary February weekday ). The decor is colourful and wonderfully eccentric. Every member of the staff was warm and friendly despite the fact that they were very busy. I ordered a chicken fajita which came with generous, fresh portions of everything and deliciously cooked chicken. It’s worth noting that although the menu shows fajita for two that can also do single portions on request (I nearly didn’t have one at all because I don’t know this). Other members in the party all complemented the food. Overall it was excellent and I strongly recommend it.

Great Mexican! Super yummy food & nice vibe. Been my fave spot for years while I lived in Canterbury. Came back 5 years later & it’s still the same great quality food, full of flavors. Funky art on the wall is for sale too! Thank you:)
